The Present State of Korean Medical Security System for the Aged and Tasks

Abstract
In Korean society of today, the interest in the medical security system for the aged is growing, due to the rapid aging. In particular, along with the appearance of the aging society and the change of disease structure, the population of the elderly who need the medical care service, and social costs for health and medical treatment are rapidly increasing. Medical security system for the aged is important, since this develops, showing various aspects depending on the social, political and economic circumstances of each country and helps highly-dependent seniors maintain human dignity in life. Recently, Korea is also expanding the public intervention in medical security for the aged to relieve the deepening of industrialization and polarization, but it is still insufficient to solve the problem regarding health care costs for the elderly, because of the fundamental limitation of public medical security and the fast aging flow. This study was conducted to examine health problems which aged people are facing, due to the rapid aging and to analyze the legal basis of the medical security system for the aged provided by the country and the present state of medical service use. This study also aims to investigate the limitation of Korean medical security system for the aged and improvement plans in order to improve the quality of life by satisfying the demand of the elderly with limited physical functions and chronic diseases for medical security and maintaining the best health condition.
